What Is STEM Education?

STEM is the acronym that represents the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. If you are an educator or an interested parent, you most likely have heard much discussion about STEM in recent years. However, STEM education extends beyond these school subjects and content areas.

STEM education is very important for the following reasons:

  1. Promotes and cultivates a skill set that governs the way we think and behave.
  2. Merges science, technology, engineering, and math together holistically rather than separately.
  3. Incorporates and encourages critical thinking and problem-solving.
  4. Helps us solve the challenges the world faces today while it prepares a workforce to address the problems of the future.

Established in 2020, STEM-apalooza!® helps support STEM education in unique and innovative ways with low-cost, hands-on STEM resources and materials that are easily accessible, ready-to-use---AND all in one place---to save educators, parents, and others money AND time!

Founder and CEO of Brennan Innovators, LLC, Joan M. Brennan, is a certified educator (State of MO) and the creator of the patented Reading Focus Cards handheld tools and apps for Mac/PC (U.S. Patents 7,565,759 and 8,360,779). Since the company’s inception in 2007, Ms. Brennan has provided her literacy tools to thousands of readers in all age groups throughout the U.S. and around the globe.

A graduate of the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) with K-12 teaching certification from the State of Missouri, Ms. Brennan is an experienced middle school educator (18+ years). Since 2006, she has been an instructor in the College for Kids Program for gifted and talented K-8 students at the St. Louis Community College, creating STEM curricula and teaching many STEM classes in the program.

More recently in 2020, Ms. Brennan launched the STEM-apalooza!® brand name, registering the trademark in October of that year. The company now designs and provides digital STEM lesson plans, study units, books and other STEM educational products for parents, teachers, students, schools, and others interested in STEM learning under the STEM-apalooza!® brand. The company’s mission is to create easily accessible and inexpensive STEM resources for ALL in K-12.

Ms. Brennan is an active board member of the Inventors Association of St. Louis (IASL) and the Illinois Innovators (i3). She is also a member of the Gifted Association of Missouri (GAM), the St. Louis Association of Gifted Education (SAGE) and the St. Louis Suburban Council of the International Literacy Association (ILA)
